RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anatomical basis and clinical application value of the modified neck-shoulder technique based on membrane autopsy in laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal prosthesis (TEP) for tension-free repairs of indirect inguinal hernia. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed the clinical data of 136 patients with indirect inguinal hernia who underwent laparoscopic TEP for tension-free repairs at the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery Unit 1, the First Hospital of Putian City, Fujian Province from June 2017 to June 2020. The patients were divided into the modified neck-shoulder technique group (68 cases) and the traditional surgery group (68 cases), according to the different surgical methods. The intraoperative and postoperative conditions of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: Both the modified neck-shoulder technique group and the traditional surgery group completed the herniorrhaphy. Compared with the traditional surgery group, the modified neck-shoulder technique group had a shorter operation time [(37.15 ± 5.320) min vs. (54.04 ± 5.202) min, t = 18.472, p < 0.001], less intraoperative blood loss [(5.53 ± 1.634) ml vs. (16.21 ± 3.375) ml, t = 23.544, p < 0.001], lower incidence of intraoperative peritoneal injury [3 cases (4.41%) vs. 9 cases (13.26%), χ2 = 3.29, p = 0.07], lower intraoperative conversion rate [1 case (1.47%) vs. 8 cases (11.76%), χ2 = 5.83, p = 0.016], and lower incidence of postoperative chronic pain [1 case (1.47%) vs. 12 cases (17.65%), χ2 = 10.291, p = 0.001], all of which were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Both groups were followed up for 12 months after surgery. Relapse was not observed in any case. CONCLUSION: Drawing upon the surgical principles of the open neck-shoulder technique and the understanding of the membrane autopsy in the inguinal region, our center has summarized a set of operation procedures called the "modified neck-shoulder technique" for laparoscopic TEP in the tension-free repairs of indirect inguinal hernias. This new surgical technique could expeditiously and precisely navigate the interlayer gap in the preperitoneal space under the enlarged view of the laparoscope. It facilitated the high ligation, disconnection, or repositioning of the hernia sac, enhancing the reliability of patch placement while minimizing collateral damage, reducing postoperative complications, and shortening operation time.

RESUMO

Nanoprobes based on lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) exhibit promising potential in bioimaging and biosensing due to their unique optical properties. However, conventional UCNP nanoprobes based on the dye quenching effect are still limited in biosensing due to their low upconversion efficiency. The advent of dye-sensitized upconversion has resulted in nanoprobes with significantly enhanced efficiency; however, these still suffer from a high initial emissive background. In view of this, herein, we have constructed a dye-quenched/sensitized switching upconversion nanoprobe for high-contrast imaging of the pH-related tumor microenvironment. Under normal conditions, the luminescence of the nanoprobe at 540 nm (UCL540) was significantly quenched by the employed dye. Upon being triggered by an acid, the dye would switch to its fluorescent form to sensitize the luminescence of UCNPs, affording a significant enhancement of UCL540. The switching from dye-quenched UCL to dye-sensitized UCL jointly enables the detection of a high signal-to-background ratio (high up to 50), allowing for high-contrast mapping of the tumor specific acidic microenvironment in vivo. We believe that this nanoplatform holds considerable promise for acid-related sensing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maize is one of the world's most important crops, so its stable production and supply is crucial for food security and socioeconomic development. The cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), is one of the major pests in maize. We evaluated the control effect of a bio-bait, an adult attractant, combined with insecticide, a 'toxicant-infused bait', on H. armigera populations in maize fields, as well as the impact on crop yield and quality through large-scale field applications in Hebei Province, China over a period spanning 2019 to 2021. RESULT: The number of male and female H. armigera adults killed by strip application ranged from 1 to 37 and 4 to 36 per strip, respectively, of which female moths were 53%. Following the application of toxicant-infused bait, we observed a significant reduction in the populations of eggs and larvae, with the average adjusted decrease range from 58% to 63% for eggs and from 34% to 62% for larvae. The application of toxicant-infused bait also resulted in a notable reduction in the proportion of damaged maize plants, with an adjusted decline rate ranging from 59% to 69%. Concurrently, we observed an increase in yield by 4% to 8%. The concentration of aflatoxin in harvested maize grains was significantly reduced from an initial level of 1.24 to 0.1 ug/kg. CONCLUSION: By applying toxicant-infused bait, there was a significant reduction in the population of H. armigera adults and their offspring, resulting in an improved yield and quality of maize. Toxicant-infused bait has great application potential in the integrated pest management of H. armigera. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Rice lacks sufficient amounts of zinc despite its vitality for human health. Leaf senescence enables redistribution of nutrients to other organs, yet Zn retransfer during deficiency is often overlooked. In this hydroponic experiment, we studied the effect of Zn deficiency on rice seedlings, focusing on the fourth leaf under control and deficient conditions. Growth phenotype analysis showed that the growth of rice nodal roots was inhibited in Zn deficiency, and the fourth leaf exhibited accelerated senescence and increased Zn ion transfer. Analyzing differentially expressed genes showed that Zn deficiency regulates more ZIP family genes involved in Zn ion retransfer. OsZIP3 upregulation under Zn-deficient conditions may not be induced by Zn deficiency, whereas OsZIP4 is only induced during Zn deficiency. Gene ontology enrichment analysis showed that Zn-deficient leaves mobilized more biological pathways (BPs) during aging, and the enrichment function differed from that of normal aging leaves. The most apparent "zinc ion transport" BP was stronger than that of normal senescence, possibly due to Zn-deficient leaves mobilizing large amounts of BP related to lipid metabolism during senescence. These results provide a basis for further functional analyses of genes and the study of trace element transfer during rice leaf senescence.

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics and prognosis of clustered cases of psittacosis pneumonia. Method: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of a cluster outbreak of psittacosis pneumonia. The analysis included epidemiological data, clinical symptoms, laboratory results, and prognosis. The diagnosis was made using mNGS and nested PCR technology. Result: Of the four cases, two had direct contact with diseased poultry while the other two did not. All cases presented with more than 39.5 °C fever and chills. Additionally, significant increases in C-reactive protein, ferritin, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase were observed in all cases, while absolute lymphocyte count decreased. Case 2 also had increased calcitonin levels. Acute respiratory failure occurred during the treatment of case 1 and case 2, leading to tracheal intubation and ventilator-assisted ventilation. Unfortunately, case 2 passed away due to sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction, while the other cases had a positive prognosis. Conclusion: mNGS facilitated the early diagnosis of psittacosis pneumonia. It is important to note that there is still a substantial risk of human-to-human transmission in psittacosis pneumonia. Absolute lymphocyte count and calcitonin levels can predict the severity and prognosis of the disease.

RESUMO

Objectives: Cervical cancer (CC) is the fourth most prevalent type of cancer in women worldwide and it is considered the leading cause of tumor-related death and malignancy. As part of complexes involved in epigenetic control, the proteins of the chromobox (CBX) family have been found to have a role in the growth of malignancies by preventing differentiation and increasing proliferation. Here, by a thorough investigation, we investigated the expression, prognostic significance, and immune infiltration of CBX in patients with CC. Materials and Methods: Differential expression, clinicopathological parameters, immune cell infiltration, enrichment analysis, genetic alteration, and prognostic value of CBXs in patients with CC were examined using TIMER, Metascape, STRING, GeneMANIA, cBioPortal, UALCAN, The Human Protein Atlas, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA), and Oncomine. Results: In CC tissues, CBX 2/3/4/5 and CBX 8 expression levels were considerably higher, whereas CBX 6/7 expression levels were lower. In CC, the CBX 5/6/8 promoters have elevated levels of methylation. The expression of CBX 2/6/8 and the pathological stage were connected. A 37% mutation rate of the differentially expressed CBX genes was observed. Also, there was a strong correlation of the CBXs expression with immune cell infiltration, such as T CD4+ cells, macrophages, neutrophils, B cells, T CD8+ cells, and dendritic cells. Conclusion: The investigation discovered that members of the CBXs family may be therapeutic targets for CC patients and may play significant roles in the development of CC tumors.

RESUMO

Background: This study compares the impact of comprehensive care and conventional care on interventional therapy in children with congenital heart disease and to provide a reference basis for clinical care. Methods: Clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining care during interventional therapy in children with congenital heart disease were identified in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases using a combination of subject terms and free terms. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to November 27th, 2022. The control group was given conventional care and the experimental group was given comprehensive care on the basis of conventional care. The outcome indicators included one or more of postoperative complications (number of cases), puncture time (minutes), pain score (points), surgical operation time (minutes), X-ray exposure time (minutes) and length of hospital stay (days). Meta-analysis was performed using Stata 14.0 software. The publication bias test was conducted using Harbor's test. Results: A total of 24 RCTs were eventually included, and a total of 2,028 study subjects were enrolled, including 1,025 in the test group and 1,003 in the control group. Meta-analysis showed that comprehensive care resulted in a lower risk of complications [risk ratio (RR) =0.27; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.21 to 0.34]. Furthermore, subjects who received comprehensive care had lower puncture time [standardized mean difference (SMD) =-2.50; 95% CI: -3.23 to -1.77], lower operating time [SMD (95% CI): -2.50 (-3.31, -1.68)], lower X-ray exposition time [SMD (95% CI): -1.29 (-2.51, -0.07)], shorter length of hospital stay [SMD (95% CI): -1.57 (-2.04, -1.09)], and lower pain scores [SMD (95% CI): -2.43 (-3.20, -1.65)]. Conclusions: Comprehensive care has higher clinical utility, which is worthy of clinical application and popularization.

RESUMO

Chalkiness, which is highly affected by nitrogen (N) management during grain filling, is critical in determining rice appearance quality and consumer acceptability. We investigated the effects of N application rates 75 (N1), 150 (N2), and 225 (N3) kg ha-1 on the source-sink carbohydrate accumulation and grain filling characteristics of two indica hybrid rice cultivars with different chalkiness levels in 2019 and 2020. We further explored the relationship between grain filling and formation of chalkiness in superior and inferior grains. In this study, carbohydrates in the functional leaves and grains of the two varieties, and grain filling parameters, could explain 66.2%, 68.0%, 88.7%, and 91.6% of the total variation of total chalky grain rate and whole chalkiness degree, respectively. They were primarily concentrated in the inferior grains. As the N fertilizer application rate increased, the chalky grain rate and chalkiness degree of both the superior and inferior grains decreased significantly. This interfered with the increase in total chalky grain rate and chalkiness. Moreover, the carbohydrate content in the functional leaves increased significantly in N2 and N3 compared with that in N1. The transfer of soluble sugar from the leaves to the grains decreased the soluble sugar and increased total starch contents, accelerated the development of grain length and width, increased grain water content, and effectively alleviated the contradiction between source and sink. These changes promoted the carbohydrate partition in superior and inferior grains, improved their average filling rate in the middle and later stages, optimized the uniformity of inferior grain fillings, and finally led to the overall reduction in rice chalkiness.

RESUMO

Inulin is the rich water-soluble storage polysaccharide after starch in nature, and utilization of inulin through hydrolysis of exo-inulinases has attracted much attention. Thermo-halo-alcohol tolerance is essential for exo-inulinase applications, while no report reveals the molecular basis involved in halo-alcohol tolerance of exo-inulinases via experimental data. In this study, two loops of exo-inulinase InuAMN8, including the loop built with 360GHVRLGPQP368 linking domains of Glyco_hydro_32N and Glyco_hydro_32C and another loop built with 169GGAG172 in the catalytic domain, were deleted to generate mutants MutG360Δ9 and MutG169Δ4, respectively. After heterologous expression, purification, and dialysis, InuAMN8, MutG169Δ4, and MutG360Δ9 showed half-lives of 144, 151, and 7 min at 50°C, respectively. InuAMN8 and MutG169Δ4 were very stable, while MutG360Δ9 showed a half-life of approximately 60 min in 5.0% (w/v) NaCl, and they showed half-lives of approximately 60 min in 25.0, 25.0, and 5.0% (w/v) ethanol, respectively. Structural analysis indicated that two cation-π bonds, which contributed to thermal properties of InuAMN8 at high temperatures, broke in MutG360Δ9. Four basic amino acid residues were exposed to the structural surface of MutG360Δ9 and formed positive and neutral electrostatic potential that caused detrimental effects on halo-alcohol tolerance. The study may provide a better understanding of the loop-function relationships that are involved in thermo-halo-alcohol adaptation of enzymes in extreme environment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To carry out prenatal screening and diagnosis for a woman with advanced maternal age. METHODS: Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) was carried out to determine the risk of fetal chromosome aneuploidy. Aminiocentesis was proceeded for fetal chromosomal karyotyping and copy number variation sequencing (CNV-seq). The fetus was subjected to systematic ultrasound screening in the second trimester. RESULTS: NIPT has indicated there was a loss of fetal sex chromosome. Karotyping of the amniocyte showed a mosaic sex chromosome abnormality 45,X[53]/46,X,+mar[7]. The result of fetal DNA CNV-seq was seq[GRCh37]del(Yq11.1q12) chrY: g.13 104 553-28 819 361del, seq[GRCh37]del(Yp11.32p11.2) chrY: g.10 001-9 873 915del (mosaic ratio: 30%). Ultrasonography discovered that the fetus had renal dysplasia and male external genitalia. The karyotypes of the couple were both normal. CONCLUSION: Multiple genetic tests should be carried out for fetus with a high risk for chromosome aneuploidies signaled by NIPT. It is difficult to predict the post-natal phenotype for fetuses with mosaic sex chromosomal aneuploidies. The couple should be carefully counseled upon genetic counseling.

RESUMO

Eupeodes corollae Fabricius, as one of the most common beneficial predatory insects in agricultural ecosystems, provides pollination and biological control services that help improve crop yield and maintain biodiversity. However, systematic research is needed on the species of aphids used for propagation. To develop highly fit populations of the important insect predator and crop pollinator, E. corollae, for research and commercial use, further research is needed to develop the most nutritious diet and efficient propagation methods. Here, the fitness of E. corollae was assessed in the laboratory after larvae were fed an aphid diet of Aphis craccivora Koch, Myzus persicae Sulzer or Megoura japonica Matsumura. The larval survival rate on M. japonica was significantly lower than on A. craccivora and M. persicae. The developmental duration for larvae (7.6 d) and pupae (6.9 d) was longest on A. craccivora. The pupal emergence rate on A. craccivora (98.0%) was significantly higher than on the other two, and lowest (64.7%) on M. japonica. On A. craccivora, M. persicae, and M. japonica, respectively, the generation time was 24.85 d, 23.12 d and 21.05 d; the value for the intrinsic rate of natural increase was 0.19, 0.20, and 0.21; and the value for the finite rate of increase was 1.21, 1.22, and 1.23. For flight variables, E. corollae attained the fastest velocity and longest distance and duration on M. japonica. The M. japonica diet, thus, provided the shortest generation time, the highest intrinsic rate of natural increase and finite rate of increase, the maximum fecundity and the greatest flight ability. Thus, to improve the survival rate of E. corollae larvae, A. craccivora or M. persicae can be used to feed newly hatched larvae, and M. japonica can be used for second- and third-instar larvae. These results provide a theoretical basis for feeding E. corollae and optimizing its ecosystem services.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spodoptera frugiperda has spread to Africa, Asia, and Oceania, posing a serious threat to global agriculture. We estimated the appropriate dose of X-ray sterilization for S. frugiperda using an X-ray irradiation instrument to investigate environmentally acceptable control techniques, laying the framework for future applications of sterile insect technology (SIT) to manage the pest environmentally-friendly. RESULTS: This study is the first to investigate the effects of X-ray irradiation on the growth, development, survival, reproduction, and flight of S. frugiperda. The results showed that irradiation with 50-400 Gy had no significant effect on pupal eclosion, but females were more sensitive than males in terms of reproductive parameters, especially when doses of radiation were > 350 Gy. After irradiation with a sub-sterilizing dose of 250 Gy, the parental sterility rate was > 85%, and the sterility traits could be passed on to their offspring, resulting in a continuous decrease in the population of F1 and F2 generations. CONCLUSION: Our laboratory experiments theoretically confirmed the feasibility of SIT for controlling S. frugiperda in the field using X-ray radiation. This study provides a theoretical basis for future regional pest management strategies. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Nocturnal moths are important pollinators of plants. The clover cutworm, Hadula trifolii, is a long-distance migratory nocturnal moth. Although the larvae of H. trifolii are polyphagous pests of many cultivated crops in Asia and Europe, the plant species pollinated by the adult are unclear. Pollen species that were attached to individual migrating moths of H. trifolii were identified based on pollen morphology and DNA to determine their host plants, geographic origin, and pollination areas. The moths were collected on their seasonal migration pathway at a small island, namely Beihuang, in the center of the Bohai Sea of China during 2014 to 2018. Pollen was detected on 28.60% of the female moths and 29.02% of the male, mainly on the proboscis, rarely on compound eyes and antennae. At least 92 species of pollen from 42 plant families, mainly from Asteraceae, Amaranthaceae, and Pinaceae, distributed throughout China were found on the test moths. Migratory H. trifolii moths visited herbaceous plants more than woody plants. Pollen of Macadamina integrifolia or M. tetraphylla was found on moths early in the migratory season. These two species are distributed in Guangdong, Yunnan, and Taiwan provinces in China, indicating that migratory moths probably traveled about 2000 km from southern China to the Beihuang Island in northern China. Here, by identifying plant species using pollen, we gained a better understanding of the interactions between H. trifolii moths and a wide range of host plants in China. This work provides valuable and unique information on the geographical origin and pollination regions for H. trifolii moths.

RESUMO

Background: Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent programmed cell death (PCD) form that plays a crucial role in tumorigenesis and might affect the antitumor effect of radiotherapy and immunotherapy. This study aimed to investigate distinct ferroptosis-related genes, their prognostic value and their relationship with immunotherapy in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods: The differentially expressed ferroptosis-related genes in HNSCC were filtered based on multiple public databases. To avoid overfitting and improve clinical practicability, univariable, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and multivariable Cox algorithms were performed to construct a prognostic risk model. Moreover, a nomogram was constructed to forecast individual prognosis. The differences in tumor mutational burden (TMB), immune infiltration and immune checkpoint genes in HNSCC patients with different prognoses were investigated. The correlation between drug sensitivity and the model was firstly analyzed by the Pearson method. Results: Ten genes related to ferroptosis were screened to construct the prognostic risk model. Kaplan-Meier (K-M) analysis showed that the prognosis of HNSCC patients in the high-risk group was significantly lower than that in the low-risk group (P < 0.001), and the area under the curve (AUC) of the 1-, 3- and 5-year receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve increased year by year (0.665, 0.743, and 0.755). The internal and external validation further verified the accuracy of the model. Then, a nomogram was build based on the reliable model. The C-index of the nomogram was superior to a previous study (0.752 vs. 0.640), and the AUC (0.729 vs. 0.597 at 1 year, 0.828 vs. 0.706 at 3 years and 0.853 vs. 0.645 at 5 years), calibration plot and decision curve analysis (DCA) also shown the satisfactory predictive capacity. Furthermore, the TMB was revealed to be positively correlated with the risk score in HNSCC patients (R = 0.14; P < 0.01). The differences in immune infiltration and immune checkpoint genes were significant (P < 0.05). Pearson analysis showed that the relationship between the model and the sensitivity to antitumor drugs was significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings identified potential novel therapeutic targets, providing further potential improvement in the individualized treatment of patients with HNSCC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fine particle pollution, specifically pollution by fine particulate matter (PM2.5), remains a significant concern in developing countries and plays an important role in the development and progression of respiratory diseases. Increasing evidences have demonstrated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) may act as vital molecules by binding to specific RNA-binding protein (RBP); however, their relationship with PM2.5 pollution is largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association between lncRNA and respiratory system inflammation caused by PM2.5. METHODS: PM2.5 components were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and ionic chromatography. We established an inflammation model of PM2.5-induced toxicity in vivo (male and female SD rats, 0, 25, 50 and 100 mg/k PM2.5, 1, 7 and 14 days, single non-invasive tracheal instillation) and in vitro (rat alveolar macrophage cell line (NR8383), 0, 50, 100, 200, 400 µM PM2.5 for 24, 48, and 72 h). lncRNA high-throughput sequencing (lncRNA-seq) was used to investigate lncRNA profiles in PM2.5-treated NR8383 cells, and RNA interference (RNAi) was applied to explore the function of the target lncRNA. The mechanisms associated with specific lncRNAs were explored using comprehensive identification of RNA-binding proteins by mass spectrometry (ChIRP-MS) and western blot. RESULTS: PM2.5-treated NR8383 cells and SD rats exhibited respiratory inflammation. lncRNA AABR07005593.1 was a pro-inflammatory factor that regulated IL-6 levels. Mechanistically, ChIRP-MS and western blot analyses revealed that highly expressed lncRNA AABR07005593.1 interacted with MCCC1 to involve in the activation of NF-κB pathway, and ultimately promoted the expression of IL-6. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that PM2.5 induced inflammation in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, lncRNA AABR07005593.1 bound to MCCC1 to potentiated IL-6 expression. Therefore, lncRNA AABR07005593.1 may act as a potential biomarker for PM2.5 inflammation.

RESUMO

Monitoring adult populations of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a major agricultural pest, provides data useful for its control. Food attractants, considered as adult insect behavior regulators based on the preference of an herbivorous pest for food sources or their volatiles, also have great potential for monitoring populations. To study the feasibility of monitoring the population dynamics and reproductive development of H. armigera in the field using food attractants, we quantitatively analyzed reproductive organ development of adults in a laboratory population as a way to predict the reproductive development of adults trapped using food attractants in the field in 2019 and 2020. The adults trapped using food attractants had obvious generational changes and the same trends in variation for females and males. The extent of ovarian development in trapped females tended to increase within each generation, and the major axis length of testis in trapped males tended to decrease. Reproductive developmental status of trapped adults also differed significantly among months. This study shows that by trapping H. armigera with food attractants, the population dynamics of adults in the field can be monitored, and reproductive anatomy can also be used to monitor adult reproductive status. These approaches are a new way to forecast the population dynamics of this pest.

RESUMO

Since 2016, the fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda) has invaded large parts of Africa and Asia, impacting millions of hectares of maize crops and thereby posing a major threat to food security. The rapid geographic spread and outbreak dynamics of S. frugiperda are tied to its unique dispersal ability and long-distance migration capability. Yet, up till present, limited research has been conducted on the physiological determinants of S. frugiperda flight and migration. In this study, we used laboratory experiments to assess whether mating and oviposition affect S. frugiperda flight ability and wingbeat frequency. During 2019-2020, migratory FAW females were trapped in Yunnan (China) and dissected to assess ovarian development. Tethered flight assays showed that gravid S. frugiperda females exhibited strong flight ability at 1-3 days following the onset of oviposition. Flight distance and duration negatively correlated with the number of deposited eggs. Ovarian dissections further showed that over 50% of migrant females were mated and 46-54% had initiated oviposition. Our study shows the complex, yet nuanced effects of reproductive status on flight capacity, with possibly a facultative trade-off between flight and reproduction. These novel insights into S. frugiperda physiology and migration behavior can guide future monitoring and integrated pest management (IPM) programs against this newly-invasive pest in China and abroad.

RESUMO

Ambient humidity can directly affect the water balance in insects. The migratory fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda Smith, has spread to more than 60 countries and regions in Africa, Asia, and Oceania that have a great difference in average ambient humidity. Understanding the effects of ambient humidity changes on its development, survival, and reproduction can help to predict its population dynamics in different habitats. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of atmospheric relative humidity (RH) on the development, survival, and reproduction and soil moisture on the pupation and emergence of fall armyworm. As a result, survival and pupal mass increased significantly with increasing RH. Among the five RHs tested, 80% RH was the most suitable for fall armyworm with the highest intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), and net reproduction rate (R0). The population growth at the different RHs in decreasing order was 80 > 100 > 60 > 40 > 20%. A relative moisture (RM) of soil from 6.80 to 47.59% was suitable for fall armyworm pupation, survival, and eclosion, but fall armyworm could not pupate normally in soil with 88.39 and 95.19% RM. The survival and emergence rate of fall armyworm pupae were reduced by irrigation that increased the RM after the mature larvae entered the soil. These findings may be helpful for refining laboratory rearing protocols, population forecasting, and management of fall armyworm.

RESUMO

The migratory fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), has become a worldwide agricultural pest. In this study, the effects of photoregime on the development, reproduction, and flight performance of fall armyworm were assessed based on two-sex life tables, ovarian and testis anatomy, and flight mill tests. The results indicated that photoregime had a significant effect on developmental duration of fall armyworm individuals, pupal survival and emergence, and adult fecundity. Among seven photoregimes tested, the 16:8 (L:D) h photoregime was the most suitable for fall armyworm fitness with the shortest pre-oviposition period and mean generation period (T), highest mating frequency and mating rate of female moths, largest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) and finite rate of increase (λ), and highest net reproduction rate (R0). Population growth for seven different photoregimes in decreasing order was 16:8 (L:D) h > 8:16 (L:D) h > 12:12 (L:D) h > 10:14 (L:D) h > 14:10 (L:D) h > 0:24 (L:D) h > 24:0 (L:D) h. The ovarian development level, mating frequency, and testis size did not significantly differ between long (16:8 (L:D) h) and short (10:14 (L:D) h) illumination. Photoregime had a significant effect on mass loss during flight of adults, but not on flight velocity, flight duration, and flight distance. These findings can be used to refine laboratory rearing protocols, accurately predict seasonal changes in population dynamics and should help improve regional forecasts and management of the fall armyworm.
